Triathlon total time calculator

Adds swim, transition, bike and run splits into a total triathlon finish time.

What this calculator does

A triathlon total is the three discipline times plus both transitions. It sounds trivial and it is, but transitions are routinely left out of a target time and they are not small: two minutes each is four minutes, which over a sprint distance can be several places.

Twenty-five minutes swimming, sixty-five on the bike and fifty running with two-minute transitions comes to 2 hours 24. The bike is the largest single component in almost every triathlon, which is why it usually receives the most training attention.

The formula

FormulaTotal time = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run

The five components are added: swim, first transition, bike, second transition and run. The total is given in hours and minutes and in plain minutes. Transitions are counted from the moment of exiting one discipline to starting the next, which includes the run to and from the transition area.

TermMeaning
T1The first transition, swim to bike, including wetsuit removal.
T2The second transition, bike to run.
Sprint distance750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run.
Olympic distance1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run.

FieldWhat to enter
Swim time (minutes)Swim time in minutes.
Transition 1 (T1) (minutes)First transition in minutes, swim to bike.
Bike time (minutes)Bike time in minutes.
Transition 2 (T2) (minutes)Second transition in minutes, bike to run.
Run time (minutes)Run time in minutes.

When to use it

Setting a target time

Building a goal from realistic splits for each discipline is more honest than picking a round total and hoping the splits arrive.

Reviewing a race

Seeing where the time actually went, transitions included, is what shapes the next training block.

Comparing two plans

Whether to chase two minutes in transition or two minutes on the bike is a real training question, and the total makes the trade explicit.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How does the run split change the total?

A fixed swim, bike and transition set across a range of run times.

25 min swim, 65 min bike, 2 min transitions
Run timeTotal timeTotal minutes
50 min2 h 24 min144.0 min
60 min2 h 34 min154.0 min
70 min2 h 44 min164.0 min
Twenty minutes of difference in the run moves the total from 2:24 to 2:44, minute for minute as expected. The four minutes of transitions in every row are worth noting: over a sprint race that is often more time than a season of run training would gain.

Questions

How long should transitions take?

For an age-group athlete, one to three minutes each is typical, with T1 usually the slower because of the wetsuit. Elite athletes manage under a minute. Transitions are the cheapest time in triathlon to improve, since they need practice rather than fitness.

Which discipline should I train most?

The bike is the largest time component in almost every triathlon, so it offers the most absolute time. Whether it offers the most improvement depends on where your weakness is, and the honest answer is usually whichever discipline you avoid.

What are the standard triathlon distances?

Sprint is 750 m, 20 km and 5 km. Olympic is 1.5 km, 40 km and 10 km. Half Ironman is 1.9 km, 90 km and 21.1 km, and full Ironman doubles that. Distances vary somewhat between events, particularly on the swim.

Does the swim time include the run to transition?

It depends on where the timing mat sits, which varies by race. Many events stop the swim clock at the water exit and start T1 there, so the run up the beach is transition time. Check the specific event if you are comparing splits closely.
