Countdown to a date calculator

Time remaining until a deadline or event.

Published 5 August 2026 · Updated 24 September 2026

What this calculator does

A countdown to a wedding, a launch, a flight or a deadline is easier to picture as days, hours and minutes than as a raw date sitting weeks away. This countdown calculator takes any target date and time and works out exactly how much time is left, or how much time has passed if the moment has already gone by.

The target can be set to a specific time of day as well as a date, which matters for anything that happens at a particular hour rather than simply "on" a date, such as a flight departure or the start of an event. The countdown updates for whichever day and time you check it, so the figure is always the true remaining span rather than a rough number of days.

The formula

FormulaRemaining = target date − now, expressed in days, hours and minutes

The target date and time are compared against the current moment. The gap between them, in milliseconds, is converted into days, hours and minutes for the headline figure, and separately into total hours, total minutes and total weeks for anyone who needs the span in a single unit.

TermMeaning
Target dateThe date the countdown is measured against.
Target timeThe time of day on the target date the countdown reaches zero.
Time remainingThe gap between now and the target, shown in days, hours and minutes.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Target dateThe date the countdown is heading toward.
Target timeThe time of day, on a 24-hour clock, that the target moment falls at.

When to use it

Counting down to an event with a specific start time

A wedding ceremony, a flight departure or a live broadcast starts at a specific time of day, not just on a date, so the countdown needs the time entered as well as the date to be accurate.

Building a countdown for a website or classroom display

A launch page or classroom countdown chart usually needs the figure broken into days, hours and minutes rather than a single day count, which is what the headline figure gives directly.

Checking how long ago a moment passed

If the target date and time have already gone by, the calculator switches to showing time since instead of time remaining, which is useful for confirming how long ago a deadline or event actually was.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How the countdown figure changes as the target moves further out

The same 09:00 target time, checked against a series of target dates spaced further into the future.

today+7Friday0.98
today+30Sunday4.27
today+90Thursday12.84
today+180Wednesday25.70

The weeks figure grows in a straight line with the target date, while the weekday cycles through all seven days as the target moves further out, only repeating every 7 days.

Questions

Can I set a countdown to a specific time, not just a date?

Yes. The target time field sets the hour and minute the countdown reaches zero at on the target date, which matters for anything, like a flight or a ceremony, that starts at a particular time rather than covering the whole day.

What happens once the countdown reaches zero?

The calculator switches from showing time remaining to showing time since, so it keeps giving a useful answer both before and after the target moment has passed.

How is a countdown calculator different from a plain days-between-dates calculator?

A days-between-dates figure is one number of days. This countdown calculator breaks the same span into days, hours and minutes, and accounts for a specific target time of day, not just a target date.

Can I use this to count down to Christmas or a birthday?

Yes, by entering that date as the target, though the days until Christmas calculator and the how old am I calculator handle those two specific cases with a day count already built in.

For a plain day count between two known dates, see the days between dates calculator. For a countdown built specifically for 25 December, use the days until Christmas calculator.
