Bike Sizing Calculator

A general bicycle frame size range from rider height, for road, mountain and hybrid bikes.

Published 26 August 2026

What this calculator does

Bike sizing starts with rider height, and manufacturers publish broad height-to-frame-size bands for road, mountain and hybrid bikes to help narrow the search before a proper fitting. This calculator applies those general published bands to give a starting frame size range for the type of bike you are looking at.

The bands differ by bike type because the frames themselves are shaped differently: road bike sizes are usually given in centimetres of seat tube length, mountain bikes are commonly given in inches (or increasingly small/medium/large), and hybrids sit somewhere in between. None of this replaces a proper fitting, which also accounts for inseam length, torso proportions and riding style.

The formula

FormulaFrame size range from published rider-height guideline bands, varying by bike type

Rider height is matched against published general sizing bands for the selected bike type (road, mountain or hybrid), each with its own typical frame-size units and ranges, to give a suggested starting range rather than a single fixed number.

TermMeaning
Frame sizeA measurement of the bicycle frame itself, usually the seat tube length, given in centimetres (road, hybrid) or inches (mountain).
Standover heightThe clearance between the rider and the top tube when standing over the bike, a separate fit check alongside frame size.

When to use it

Narrowing down a size before trying bikes in person

Getting a rough frame size range from height first makes an in-store test ride, or an online size guide, much faster to navigate.

Buying a bike as a gift or for someone else

When the intended rider is not available to be fitted in person, a height-based estimate is the most practical starting point.

Comparing size charts across brands

Manufacturers label frame sizes differently (numeric centimetres, inches, or S/M/L), so a height-based estimate gives a consistent reference point to check any specific brand's chart against.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How the suggested road bike frame size changes with height

A spread of rider heights against the road bike sizing bands.

Road bike
Rider heightSuggested frame size range
155 cm47 to 49 cm (frame size)
163 cm49 to 51 cm (frame size)
170 cm51 to 53 cm (frame size)
178 cm53 to 55 cm (frame size)
183 cm55 to 57 cm (frame size)
190 cm57 to 59 cm (frame size)
The suggested range rises steadily with height, moving from the high-40s centimetres for shorter riders up into the high-50s and 60cm range for taller riders.

How the suggested frame size range differs by bike type at the same height

The same 175cm rider height, checked against all three bike types.

175 cm rider height
Bike typeSuggested frame size range
Road53 to 55 cm (frame size)
Mountain18 to 19 inches (frame size)
Hybrid50 to 52 cm (frame size)
At the same height, mountain bike sizing is given in inches rather than centimetres, and hybrid frames tend to run a size or two smaller in centimetre terms than road frames at that height.

Questions

Is height alone enough to choose a bike frame size?

It is a reliable starting point but not the whole picture. Inseam length, torso and arm length, and personal preference for a more upright or more stretched-out riding position all affect the ideal size within the suggested range.

Why are mountain bike sizes given in inches?

It is a long-standing industry convention for mountain bikes, distinct from the centimetre seat-tube measurements typically used for road bikes, though many mountain bike brands now also size by S/M/L rather than a number.

What if my height falls right at the edge of two ranges?

Either size in the overlap can work depending on riding style: the smaller size in the range suits a more aggressive, sportier position, while the larger size suits a more upright, relaxed position.

Should I trust this over a bike shop fitting?

No. This is a general published guideline meant to narrow the search before trying a bike, not a substitute for an in-person fitting, which accounts for the specific frame geometry and the rider's proportions directly.
