What this calculator does
Vinyl flooring is usually priced by the square metre rather than sold in fixed-size boxes the way tiles or laminate boards often are, so a flooring cost calculator built around boxes does not translate cleanly. This one works the way vinyl is actually quoted: enter the room dimensions, a price per square metre, and a wastage allowance for cuts and offcuts, and it returns the total spend.
The figure people forget is underlay. Sheet and plank vinyl is frequently laid over a separate underlay for cushioning and moisture protection, priced per square metre in its own right, and it is easy to price the vinyl alone and then be surprised by the underlay line on the invoice. This calculator adds that in as a second per-m² rate, set to zero if you are not using one.
The formula
Multiply room length by width for the floor area, add the wastage percentage to allow for offcuts and pattern matching, then multiply that adjusted area by the price per square metre. Underlay, if used, is costed the same way over the same wasted area and added to the vinyl cost for a total.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Wastage allowance | Extra material bought beyond the exact floor area, to cover cutting waste, mistakes and pattern repeats. |
| Price per m² | The vinyl supplier's quoted rate per square metre, exclusive of underlay or installation unless you say otherwise. |
| Underlay | A separate cushioning or moisture-barrier layer laid beneath the vinyl, usually priced per square metre on its own. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Room length (m) | The length of the room or area being floored, in metres. |
| Room width (m) | The width of the room or area being floored, in metres. |
| Wastage allowance (%) | A percentage added to the floor area to cover cutting waste. 10% is a common starting point for a simple rectangular room; irregular rooms or pattern-matched vinyl may need more. |
| Price per m² ($) | The vinyl price per square metre, as quoted by the supplier. |
| Underlay cost per m² (0 if not needed) ($) | The underlay price per square metre, if one is being used. Leave at zero if the vinyl is being laid without underlay. |
When to use it
Quoting a single room
A bedroom or living area being re-floored in vinyl: measure the length and width, apply a wastage allowance, and the calculator returns the vinyl spend and, if relevant, the underlay spend separately.
Comparing supplier quotes
Two suppliers quoting different per-m² rates and different wastage assumptions can be run through the same inputs to see the total cost difference, not just the headline price per square metre.
Budgeting with and without underlay
Setting the underlay rate to zero shows the vinyl-only cost, then adding a realistic underlay rate shows how much that layer adds to the total, useful when deciding whether to include it.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
How much does vinyl flooring cost at different price points?
A 5 m by 4 m room at a range of vinyl prices per square metre.
| Price per m² | Total cost | Vinyl needed (with wastage) |
|---|---|---|
| $20 | $440.00 | 22.00 m² |
| $30 | $660.00 | 22.00 m² |
| $40 | $880.00 | 22.00 m² |
| $50 | $1,100.00 | 22.00 m² |
| $65 | $1,430.00 | 22.00 m² |
| $80 | $1,760.00 | 22.00 m² |
How does wastage allowance change the total spend?
The same room and price, with the wastage allowance varied.
| Wastage allowance | Total cost | Vinyl needed (with wastage) |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | $800.00 | 20.00 m² |
| 5% | $840.00 | 21.00 m² |
| 10% | $880.00 | 22.00 m² |
| 15% | $920.00 | 23.00 m² |
| 20% | $960.00 | 24.00 m² |
Questions
Why is this different from a general flooring calculator?
Tiles and laminate boards are usually bought by the box, so a flooring calculator built around boxes works out how many boxes to buy. Vinyl is more often sold and priced per square metre, so this calculator works directly in cost per square metre rather than converting to boxes.
How much wastage should I allow for vinyl?
A simple rectangular room with sheet vinyl running in one direction often needs only 5 to 10 percent extra. Rooms with alcoves, doorways or a pattern that needs matching typically need more, and it is worth checking the supplier's own recommendation for the specific product.
Does this include installation labour?
No. It covers material cost only, being the vinyl itself and an optional underlay. Installation is normally quoted separately and varies by installer, region and whether the existing floor needs preparation.
Should I include underlay even if my vinyl has a built-in cushioned backing?
Many vinyl products already include their own cushioning or acoustic backing, in which case a separate underlay is not needed. Check the product specification before adding an underlay cost, and set the underlay rate to zero if none is required.
