Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator

Estimated cost per mow and per year for a lawn, from your own area and price inputs.

Published 25 August 2026

What this calculator does

A lawn mowing cost calculator turns a lawn's area and a price per square metre into a cost per visit and a total for the year, once you know roughly how often it gets cut. Mowing prices vary a great deal by region, lawn condition and whether the job includes edging or clippings removal, so this calculator asks for your own price rather than assuming one.

The main thing that changes the annual total is mowing frequency, not just the size of the lawn. A larger lawn cut a dozen times a year can cost less across the year than a smaller lawn cut weekly through a long growing season, so it is worth checking both numbers before comparing quotes.

The formula

FormulaCost per mow = Area × Price per m²; Annual cost = Cost per mow × Mows per year

Multiply the lawn area by the price per square metre to get the cost of a single mow, then multiply that by the number of mows expected over the year to get the annual total.

TermMeaning
Lawn areaThe area of lawn actually being mowed, in square metres.
Mowing priceThe rate charged per square metre for a single mow.
Mows per yearHow many times the lawn is expected to be cut over a full year, which depends on climate and growing season.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Lawn area (m²)The total lawn area to be mowed, in square metres.
Mowing price ($/m²)The price charged per square metre for one mow. Rates vary widely, so use a quote or your own local rate rather than the default.
Mows per yearHow many times the lawn will be mowed over the year. A year-round mild climate might mean weekly mowing (around 45 to 50 times a year); a shorter growing season might mean well under half that.

When to use it

Budgeting for a lawn care service

Turning a quoted per-mow price into an annual figure makes it easier to compare against a fixed annual contract price or against doing the mowing yourself.

Comparing lawns of different sizes

Two lawns quoted at the same price per square metre can have very different annual costs once their areas and mowing frequencies are both accounted for.

Deciding how often to mow

Cutting less often lowers the annual cost directly, so weighing frequency against lawn appearance and health is worth doing before committing to a schedule.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How mowing cost changes with lawn area, at a fixed price and frequency

A fixed $0.18 per square metre and 26 mows a year, across a range of lawn areas.

$0.18/m² price, 26 mows a year
Lawn areaCost per mowAnnual cost
200 m²$36.00$936.00
300 m²$54.00$1,404.00
400 m²$72.00$1,872.00
500 m²$90.00$2,340.00
750 m²$135.00$3,510.00
1,000 m²$180.00$4,680.00
Both the per-mow cost and the annual cost scale directly with lawn area once the price per square metre and mowing frequency are held fixed.

How annual cost changes with mowing frequency, at a fixed lawn area and price

A fixed 400 square metre lawn at $0.18 per square metre, across a range of mowing frequencies.

400 m² lawn, $0.18/m² price
Mows per yearCost per mowAnnual cost
12$72.00$864.00
18$72.00$1,296.00
26$72.00$1,872.00
52$72.00$3,744.00
104$72.00$7,488.00
150$72.00$10,800.00
The cost per mow stays the same regardless of frequency, since it only depends on area and price; the annual cost rises in direct proportion to how many times the lawn gets cut.

Questions

What is a typical lawn mowing price per square metre?

It varies widely by region, lawn condition, accessibility and whether extras like edging or clipping removal are included, so there is no reliable universal figure. Use a local quote or your own recent invoice as the price input for an accurate result.

How many times a year does a lawn need mowing?

It depends on climate, grass type and rainfall. A lawn in a long, mild growing season might be cut weekly through the warmer months, while one with a short season might only need mowing a dozen or so times a year. Adjust the mows-per-year input to match your own conditions.

Does a bigger lawn always cost more to mow overall?

Not necessarily, once frequency is taken into account. A large lawn mowed infrequently can cost less across a year than a smaller lawn mowed every week through a long growing season.

Should I include edging and clean-up in the price per square metre?

If your quote bundles edging, whipper-snipping or clipping removal into one rate, use that all-in rate as the price input. If those are billed separately, add their cost on top of the figures this calculator produces.
