Reading Time by Page Count Calculator

How long it takes to read a given number of pages, from an editable words-per-page figure and reading speed.

Published 26 August 2026

What this calculator does

Working out how long it takes to read 250 pages, or any other page count, needs one extra piece of information beyond page count and reading speed: how many words are actually on a page. That figure varies enormously with font size, page trim size, margins and line spacing, so this calculator treats it as a plain editable input rather than a hidden assumption.

A commonly cited average for a standard printed novel is around 250 to 300 words per page, which is the default used here, but a dense non-fiction hardback or a large-print edition can sit well outside that range. Enter the figure for your actual book if you know it, or adjust the default up or down for a rough guide.

The formula

FormulaMinutes = (Pages × Words per page) / Reading speed (words per minute)

Multiply the number of pages by the words-per-page figure to estimate the total word count, then divide that by your reading speed in words per minute to get the time. All three numbers are inputs you control, so the estimate can be tuned to a specific book and a specific reader.

TermMeaning
PagesThe number of pages to be read.
Words per pageAn editable average word count per page, since this is not fixed across books or formats.
Reading speedWords read per minute, which varies by reader, language and material difficulty.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Number of pagesThe number of pages you want to estimate reading time for.
Words per page (editable average) (words)An average words-per-page figure. Around 250 to 300 suits a typical printed novel; adjust for denser or larger-print text.
Reading speed (wpm)Your reading speed in words per minute. A commonly cited average silent reading speed is roughly 200 to 250 wpm.

When to use it

Planning study or assignment reading

Given a fixed number of pages to get through before a deadline, this converts that into an actual time budget rather than a guess.

Choosing between two editions

A large-print or heavily illustrated edition can have far fewer words per page than a standard paperback of the same book, so the page count alone is not a reliable guide to reading time.

Setting a daily reading target

Working backwards from a total page count and a deadline, this shows how many pages need reading per day, and how long each day's reading session will actually take.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How long different page counts take at a typical reading pace

A range of page counts at the default words-per-page and reading-speed settings.

275 words per page, 240 words per minute
PagesReading time
30 pages34 min 23 s
100 pages114 min 35 s
150 pages171 min 53 s
250 pages286 min 28 s
350 pages401 min 3 s
500 pages572 min 55 s
At this pace, 250 pages comes out to a little under 5 hours of reading, while a 500-page book takes close to 9 and a half hours, scaling in direct proportion to page count.

Questions

How long does it take to read 250 pages?

At a typical 275 words per page and a 240 words-per-minute reading speed, 250 pages works out to roughly 4 hours and 45 minutes. Slower or faster reading speeds, or a page with more or fewer words, will shift that figure noticeably.

Why not just use a fixed words-per-page number?

Because it varies too much to be reliable as a fixed assumption. Font size, page trim size, margins and line spacing all change how many words fit on a page, so a hidden fixed value would quietly mislead anyone reading a book outside the typical paperback format.

Is this the same as the word-count reading time calculator?

It answers the same underlying question but starts from a page count instead of a word count. If you already know the exact word count of what you are reading, the reading and speaking time calculator skips the page-to-word conversion entirely.

What reading speed should I use?

Average silent reading speed for adults is commonly cited as roughly 200 to 250 words per minute, though it varies by person, language familiarity and how demanding the material is. Timing yourself on a page or two of the actual text gives a more accurate figure than a generic average.

If you already know the word count rather than the page count, use the reading and speaking time calculator instead.
