What this calculator does
Balloon count depends far more on the style than on the size of the arch. An 8 by 6 foot arch takes 21 balloons as a single row and 116 as a four-per-cluster garland, from exactly the same dimensions.
The other lever is balloon diameter, and it works against you quickly. Dropping from 11 inch to 5 inch balloons on that same arch takes the garland count from 116 to 254, because you are filling the same length with balloons less than half the size. Mixed sizes are what gives a garland its organic look, so the count is a planning figure rather than a shopping list.
The formula
The arch length is estimated from its height and width, using height plus width for a wide arch. A single row needs about 0.87 balloons per balloon-diameter of length. A garland packs four or five balloons into each cluster and needs roughly 4.8 or 6.3 balloons per diameter, since clusters sit side by side along the whole length.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Single row | Balloons threaded in a line, the classic simple arch. |
| Garland | Balloons grouped into four or five balloon clusters and packed along a strip, giving the dense organic look. |
| Cluster | A group of balloons tied together as one unit, which is then attached to the strip or frame. |
| Arch length | The distance along the curve, not the straight line between the ends. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Arch height (ft) | Arch height in feet, from the ground to the top of the curve. |
| Arch width (ft) | Arch width in feet, the span between the two feet. |
| Balloon diameter (in) | Balloon diameter in inches. 11 inch is the standard party balloon; 5 inch balloons are used as filler in garlands. |
| Arch style | Single row for a simple arch, garland for the dense organic style. This makes more difference to the count than anything else. |
When to use it
Ordering balloons for an event
Balloons come in bags of a fixed count, and knowing the requirement in advance avoids both running short mid-build and buying three bags too many.
Comparing a simple arch with a garland
The garland look costs roughly five times the balloons, which is worth knowing before committing to it.
Budgeting a decoration
Balloon count drives both material cost and build time, and a 250 balloon garland is several hours of inflating.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
How does balloon size change the count?
The same arch built from balloons of different diameters.
| Balloon diameter | Balloons needed | Estimated arch length | Balloon diameter used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 in | 254 | 22.0 ft | 5.0 in |
| 9 in | 141 | 22.0 ft | 9.0 in |
| 11 in | 116 | 22.0 ft | 11.0 in |
| 16 in | 80 | 22.0 ft | 16.0 in |
Questions
How many balloons do I need for an arch?
For a typical 8 by 6 foot arch, about 21 as a single row or 116 as a four-balloon garland using 11 inch balloons. The style matters far more than the dimensions: a garland uses roughly five times what a single row does over the same length.
What is the difference between a single row and a garland?
A single row threads balloons in a line along a strip or rod. A garland ties them into clusters of four or five, which are then packed together so the balloons fill out in all directions. The garland is the dense, organic look and needs far more balloons.
What balloon sizes should I mix?
A common approach is mostly 11 inch with some 5 inch as filler and a few 16 inch as accents. The mix is what stops a garland looking mechanical. Calculate the bulk from your main size and add roughly a fifth again in filler.
How long does a balloon arch take to build?
Several hours for a garland of a hundred or more balloons, most of it inflating and tying. An electric pump makes a substantial difference. Building the day before is common, though air-filled balloons soften noticeably within a day or two.
