Speed (km/h) Calculator

Average speed in km/h from a distance and time, for running, cycling, driving or boating.

Published 27 August 2026

What this calculator does

Average speed in km/h is simply distance travelled divided by time taken, expressed in kilometres per hour. It answers the plain question of how fast something moved on average over a trip, whether that is a run, a bike leg, a car journey or a boat crossing, without needing to think in terms of pace per kilometre.

This is a good running speed km/h question is really asking for a benchmark: a relaxed jog usually sits somewhere around 8 to 10 km/h, a solid recreational run around 10 to 13 km/h, and competitive runners well above that. The same calculation applies just as well to an average boat speed km/h, where distance and elapsed time are usually all that is logged.

The formula

FormulaSpeed (km/h) = Distance (km) / Time (hours)

Enter the distance covered and the total time taken, split into hours, minutes and seconds. The calculator converts the time to hours and divides distance by that figure to get kilometres per hour, then converts the same result to miles per hour and metres per second for reference.

TermMeaning
SpeedDistance covered divided by time taken, in kilometres per hour.
DistanceThe total distance travelled, in kilometres.
TimeThe total elapsed time for that distance, split into hours, minutes and seconds.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Distance (km)The total distance covered, in kilometres.
HoursWhole hours of elapsed time.
MinutesWhole minutes of elapsed time.
SecondsWhole seconds of elapsed time.

When to use it

Checking a run or ride against a benchmark

Comparing a session's average speed in km/h against a typical range for that activity gives a quick sense of effort level without needing splits or pace tables.

Estimating a boat or vehicle's average speed

Logging distance travelled and time taken on a crossing or a drive gives an average boat speed km/h or road speed, useful for planning the next leg of a trip.

Converting a known speed for another audience

A speed already known in km/h can be checked against mph or m/s, useful when comparing sources that use different units.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

What speed does a 5 km run at different finish times work out to?

The same 5 km distance across a range of finishing times.

5 km distance
Minutes takenSpeedSame speed in mph
18 min16.67 km/h10.36
20 min15.00 km/h9.32
22 min13.64 km/h8.47
25 min12.00 km/h7.46
30 min10.00 km/h6.21
35 min8.57 km/h5.33
A 5 km run finished in 25 minutes averages 12.00 km/h; the same distance in 20 minutes averages 15.00 km/h, showing how much a faster finish time changes the average speed for a fixed distance.

Questions

What is a good running speed in km/h?

For most recreational runners, an easy pace sits around 8 to 10 km/h and a solid effort around 10 to 13 km/h, though this varies widely with fitness, terrain and distance. Competitive distance runners typically average well above 15 km/h.

How is this different from a pace calculator?

A pace calculator usually starts from minutes per kilometre or mile, aimed at runners pacing a race. This calculator starts from distance and total time and gives speed directly in km/h, which suits any activity, including cycling, driving or boating.

How do I convert km/h to mph myself?

Divide the km/h figure by 1.60934. The calculator does this automatically alongside the main result.

Can I use this for a boat or a car?

Yes. The maths is the same regardless of what is moving: distance covered divided by time taken. It is commonly used to check an average boat speed km/h on a crossing or a vehicle's average speed on a drive.

For runners who prefer to think in pace rather than speed, see the running pace and finish time calculator.
