What this calculator does
Small rodents compress a whole life into a few years, and they do not do it at a steady rate. A guinea pig is roughly equivalent to a 32-year-old human at six months and a 50-year-old at one year, having gained eighteen human-equivalent years in its second six months alone.
The pace then slows. From one year to three, a guinea pig moves from about 50 to about 92 in human terms, which is 42 years over two years of life against 50 years in the first one. That curve is why a straight multiplier does not work for small pets any more than it does for cats and dogs.
The formula
The age in months is looked up against a published conversion chart for the species and interpolated between the listed points. The chart is non-linear, rising steeply through the first year and flattening afterwards, which reflects how quickly these animals reach maturity relative to their total lifespan.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Human-equivalent age | A life-stage comparison rather than a measurement. Useful for communication, not for anything clinical. |
| Guinea pig lifespan | Commonly 5 to 7 years with good care, considerably longer than most owners expect. |
| Hamster lifespan | Typically 2 to 3 years, which is why hamster ageing runs faster still on the chart. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Animal | Guinea pig or hamster. The two charts differ because the species have very different lifespans. |
| Pet's age (months) | Age in months. Use months rather than years, since the early part of the curve changes quickly. |
When to use it
Understanding what life stage a small pet is at
A two-year-old guinea pig is well into middle age, which is not obvious from the number two and changes how you interpret slowing down or weight change.
Knowing when to watch more closely
Small rodents hide illness effectively and decline quickly once it shows. Knowing an animal is into its later stage is a prompt to pay closer attention.
Explaining a pet age to a child
Small pets are often a child first animal, and the human-equivalent figure makes the shortness of the life easier to talk about in advance.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
What is each guinea pig age in human years?
A range of guinea pig ages in months, converted to human-equivalent years.
| Age | Human-equivalent age | Pet's age in years | Chart used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 32.0 years | 0.50 years | Published guinea pig / hamster age-conversion chart (non-linear: faster ageing early in life, slower later) |
| 12 months | 50.0 years | 1.00 years | Published guinea pig / hamster age-conversion chart (non-linear: faster ageing early in life, slower later) |
| 24 months | 68.0 years | 2.00 years | Published guinea pig / hamster age-conversion chart (non-linear: faster ageing early in life, slower later) |
| 36 months | 92.0 years | 3.00 years | Published guinea pig / hamster age-conversion chart (non-linear: faster ageing early in life, slower later) |
Questions
How long do guinea pigs live?
Commonly 5 to 7 years with good care, and sometimes longer. They are frequently sold as short-lived starter pets, which understates the commitment considerably. Hamsters are genuinely short-lived at 2 to 3 years.
Why is the conversion not a straight multiplier?
Because maturity and ageing run at different rates. A guinea pig is sexually mature within a couple of months, which is a large fraction of its life spent as an adult, so the early part of the curve is very steep and the later part much flatter.
When is a guinea pig considered old?
Generally from around four years, which the chart puts well into human old age. Signs include reduced activity, weight loss, dental problems and stiffness. Regular weighing is the single most useful monitoring habit, since weight loss usually precedes visible illness.
Is the chart the same for hamsters?
No, hamsters have their own chart because their lifespan is roughly half a guinea pig. The same age in months maps to a considerably older human equivalent, which is why the species selector matters.
For cats, which age on a different curve again, see the cat age calculator. For birds, see the pet bird age calculator.
