Number to Words Converter

Turns a number written in words like "8 billion" into a full numeral, or a numeral back into words.

Published 27 August 2026

What this calculator does

A figure like "8 billion" is easy to say and easy to misread: is that 8,000,000,000, or did someone mean 8 million and drop a word? This converter turns any amount plus a scale word (thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion) into the full numeral, with every zero present, and does the reverse too: paste in a full numeral and get back the word form.

The place people go wrong is the short scale itself. A billion here means a thousand million (9 zeros), not the older long-scale billion (a million million, 12 zeros) still used in a few countries. This calculator uses the short scale, which is now standard in English-language finance, media and government reporting.

The formula

FormulaNumeral = amount x scale factor (thousand = 1e3, million = 1e6, billion = 1e9, trillion = 1e12); word form is the reverse lookup

Words to numeral multiplies the amount by the value of its scale word: thousand is 10 to the 3, million is 10 to the 6, billion is 10 to the 9, trillion is 10 to the 12, quadrillion is 10 to the 15. Numeral to words does the reverse: it finds the largest scale that fits into the number and expresses the remainder as a decimal amount of that scale.

TermMeaning
Scale wordThe magnitude name (thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion) attached to an amount.
Short scaleThe naming system where each new scale word is 1,000 times the last: thousand, million, billion, trillion. Standard in English-language usage today.
NumeralThe number written out fully in digits, with every zero shown.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
DirectionChoose whether you are starting from a word amount (like "8 billion") or a full numeral.
AmountThe plain number in front of the scale word, used when converting words to a numeral. Decimals are fine, such as 3.5.
Scale wordThe magnitude word attached to the amount. Leave as "(none)" if the amount already is the full number.
Full numberThe full numeral to convert into words, used when converting a numeral to words.

When to use it

Reading a headline figure

News and financial reports quote round sums like "2.3 billion" or "450 million". Converting to the full numeral shows exactly how many zeros that involves, which is easy to lose track of by eye.

Writing a report or a form

Some documents want figures spelled out or expanded in full rather than abbreviated, especially in finance and government paperwork where a stray missing zero matters.

Checking against the long scale

Older usage in parts of Europe treats a billion as a million million. Converting a word amount to its full numeral resolves the ambiguity before it causes a costly misunderstanding.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How many zeros are in a thousand, a million, a billion and a trillion?

Holding the amount at 1 and stepping through each scale word shows how fast the numerals grow.

Amount of 1, scale word varied
Scale wordFull numeralWritten as words
Thousand1,0001 thousand
Million1,000,0001 million
Billion1,000,000,0001 billion
Trillion1,000,000,000,0001 trillion
Quadrillion1.0000e+151 quadrillion
Each step adds three more zeros: a thousand has 3, a million 6, a billion 9, a trillion 12, a quadrillion 15.

What do common billion-scale figures look like in full?

A range of amounts at the billion scale, the size that shows up most often in national economic figures.

Scale word fixed at billion
AmountFull numeralScientific notation
1 billion1,000,000,0001.000e+9
2.5 billion2,500,000,0002.500e+9
5 billion5,000,000,0005.000e+9

8 billion in numbers is 8,000,000,000: an 8 followed by nine zeros.

Questions

How many zeros are in 8 billion?

Nine. 8 billion in numbers is written 8,000,000,000, since a billion (short scale) is 10 to the 9, or a thousand million.

What is the difference between the short scale and long scale billion?

The short scale billion is a thousand million (9 zeros) and is standard in English-language use today. The long scale billion, still used in some non-English contexts, is a million million (12 zeros), which this calculator does not use.

Can I convert decimals like 3.5 million?

Yes. Enter 3.5 as the amount and million as the scale word to get 3,500,000.

Does this calculator work for numbers below a thousand?

Yes, set the scale word to "(none)" and the amount is used as the full numeral directly.

For very large or very small figures in exponent form rather than word form, see the scientific notation calculator, or for round-number arithmetic in that form, the standard form arithmetic calculator.
