What this calculator does
Once a paved area is planned, the practical question shifts from cost to quantity: how many pavers do I need to actually cover it. This pavers need calculator answers that directly, dividing the area by the footprint of a single paver and rounding up, plus a waste allowance for cuts, edges and the occasional broken piece.
This is a different question from a paving cost estimate. A cost estimate turns an area and a price per square metre into a dollar figure; this calculator turns an area and a paver size into a paver count, the number you actually need to order or have delivered before laying begins.
The formula
Divide the paved area by the area of one paver (length times width) to get a raw paver count, add the waste allowance as a percentage on top to cover cuts and breakage, then round up to the next whole paver, since a fraction of a paver still means buying a whole one.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Paver area | The footprint of one paver: its length multiplied by its width. |
| Waste allowance | Extra pavers bought to cover cuts at edges, corners and around obstacles, plus the odd breakage. |
| Pavers needed | The area to pave, divided by one paver’s area, increased by the waste allowance and rounded up. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Area to pave (m²) | The total area to be paved, in square metres. |
| Paver length (m) | The length of a single paver. |
| Paver width (m) | The width of a single paver. |
| Waste / breakage allowance (%) | A percentage added on top for cuts, edges and breakage; higher for complex layouts with lots of cutting. |
When to use it
Ordering pavers for a patio or path
Before placing an order, converting the planned area and chosen paver size into an actual unit count avoids under-ordering and having to match a batch later.
Comparing paver sizes for the same area
A larger paver covers the same area with fewer units; running two paver sizes through this calculator side by side shows the trade-off in unit count before choosing one.
Allowing for a complicated layout
A path with curves, steps or borders needs more cutting than a plain rectangle, so increasing the waste allowance reflects that extra loss before ordering rather than running short mid-job.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
How many pavers for a range of areas, at a fixed paver size
A single paver size and waste allowance, across a range of areas to pave.
| Area to pave | Pavers needed | Pavers before waste allowance |
|---|---|---|
| 5 m² | 35 | 32 |
| 10 m² | 69 | 63 |
| 20 m² | 138 | 125 |
| 30 m² | 207 | 188 |
| 50 m² | 344 | 313 |
| 100 m² | 688 | 625 |
How the waste allowance changes the paver count for a fixed area
A fixed 20 m² area and paver size, across a range of waste allowances.
Questions
What waste allowance should I use?
A simple rectangular area with no cuts can often get by with 5 to 10%. A layout with curves, steps, borders or lots of obstacles to cut around typically needs 15 to 20% or more, since more of each affected paver ends up as offcut.
Does this account for the gap between pavers (joint width)?
No, it assumes pavers are laid edge to edge using their full stated footprint. A wide joint or sand-set gap between pavers would slightly reduce how many are needed to cover the same area; adjust the paver size entered here to approximate that if your joints are wide.
How is this different from a paving cost calculator?
A paving cost calculator turns area and a price per square metre into a dollar total. This calculator turns area and paver dimensions into an actual unit count, the number to physically order.
Should I round up or down for the final paver count?
Always round up. A fractional paver still means purchasing and cutting a whole extra paver, so the count here is already rounded up to the next whole unit.
