What this calculator does
This underline text generator converts ordinary typed text into text that appears underlined almost anywhere it is pasted, without needing bold, italic or rich-text formatting controls. It works by inserting a Unicode combining low line character after every letter, number and symbol you type.
Because the underline is part of the text itself rather than a formatting style applied on top of it, it survives being copied into places that strip formatting, such as social media bios, usernames, plain-text chat apps and comment fields that only accept plain characters.
The formula
Each character you type is followed immediately by the combining low line character (U+0332). Most fonts and rendering engines draw that mark as a line directly beneath the preceding character, and stacking one after every character produces what reads as a continuous underline across the whole string.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Combining character | A Unicode character that attaches to and modifies the character before it, rather than standing on its own. |
| Combining low line (U+0332) | The specific combining mark used here, which draws a short horizontal line under the base character. |
| Coverage | How consistently different apps and fonts render the combining mark; support is very broad but not universal. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Text | Any text you want to underline. Spaces, punctuation and numbers all get the combining mark too. |
When to use it
A social media bio or display name
Platforms that do not offer text formatting still render combining-mark tricks like this one, since the underline is baked into the characters rather than applied through a formatting menu.
Emphasis in a plain-text chat
Messaging apps without rich text still show the underline, letting a word or phrase stand out without relying on capital letters or asterisks.
Headings in plain-text documents
A quick way to mark a heading or label as underlined in a plain-text file or comment, where markdown or HTML underline tags are not available.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
Sample words with underline characters added
Short pieces of text run through the generator, showing the underlined result and how many combining marks were inserted.
| Text entered | Underlined text | Character count |
|---|---|---|
| hello | h̲e̲l̲l̲o̲ | 5 |
| Sale Now On | S̲a̲l̲e̲ ̲N̲o̲w̲ ̲O̲n̲ | 11 |
| underline | u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲ | 9 |
| follow me | f̲o̲l̲l̲o̲w̲ ̲m̲e̲ | 9 |
Questions
Will this look the same in every app?
Mostly, but not guaranteed. Support for the combining low line character is very broad across modern fonts and platforms, though a small number of older or minimal text renderers may show the underline with uneven spacing or not at all.
Is this a real underline formatting style?
No. It is plain Unicode text that happens to render with a line under it, not an HTML or rich-text underline. Copying it into a document that supports proper underline formatting will not carry over as an actual formatting style, just as these particular characters.
Does it work with spaces and punctuation?
Yes, the combining mark is added after every character in the text you enter, including spaces, numbers and punctuation, so the underline runs continuously across the whole string.
Can I generate other styled text this way?
Yes, the same combining-character idea is used for other Unicode text effects. For turning text into superscript characters instead, see the superscript generator.
For a different Unicode text effect, see the superscript generator. To check whether two pieces of text match exactly, see the case-sensitive text comparison tool.
