Minecraft Stack Calculator

Converts a Minecraft item count to stacks and leftover items, or stacks back to a total, with an editable stack size.

Published 26 August 2026

What this calculator does

Most items in Minecraft stack in groups of 64: a full inventory slot of cobblestone, dirt or wood is 64 blocks, not one. This Minecraft stack calculator converts a raw item count into full stacks plus a leftover, or works the other way and turns a number of stacks and a leftover back into a single total, so you can plan storage, trades or crafting without counting slots by hand.

Not everything stacks the same way. Most blocks and materials stack to 64, but some items such as ender pearls, snowballs and eggs stack only to 16, and a handful of items, like most tools, weapons, armour and enchanted books, do not stack at all (a stack size of 1). The items-per-stack field below defaults to 64 but can be changed to match whatever item you are actually counting.

The formula

FormulaStacks = floor(total items / items per stack); leftover = total items mod items per stack; total items = stacks × items per stack + leftover

Converting a total to stacks divides the total by the stack size and keeps only the whole-number part for the stack count, with whatever is left over after those full stacks becoming the leftover: stacks = floor(total ÷ items per stack), leftover = total − (stacks × items per stack). Working backwards, total items = (stacks × items per stack) + leftover. A single chest holds 27 slots and a double chest holds 54, so the calculator also shows how many chests that many stacks would need to store, at one stack per slot.

TermMeaning
StackA single inventory slot filled with multiple copies of the same item, up to the item's maximum stack size.
Items per stackThe maximum number of that item allowed in one stack: 64 for most blocks and materials, 16 for a smaller group of items such as ender pearls, and 1 for items that do not stack at all.
LeftoverThe items remaining after the largest possible number of full stacks has been taken out.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
DirectionChoose whether you are starting from a total item count, or from a number of stacks plus a leftover.
Items per stackThe maximum stack size for the item in question. Leave at 64 for most blocks and materials, or change it to 16 or 1 for items that stack differently.
Total items (used when solving stacks)The total number of individual items, used when converting a total into stacks and leftover.
Full stacks (used when solving total)The number of full stacks you already have, used when converting stacks back into a total.
Leftover items (used when solving total)Any items left over outside those full stacks, used when converting stacks back into a total.

When to use it

Planning storage before a big build

Knowing that a build needs, say, 5 stacks and 20 leftover blocks rather than a vague pile makes it obvious how many trips to a chest or shulker box are actually needed.

Splitting a haul with other players

Converting a mixed pile of items into stacks and leftovers first makes it far easier to divide loot evenly between a group, since whole stacks split cleanly and only the leftover needs discussing.

Working out storage space for a farm

An automated farm producing items over time is easier to plan for once its output is expressed in stacks and chests, rather than as a raw item count that keeps climbing.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How many stacks does a given item count make, at the standard stack size of 64?

A range of total item counts, each split into full stacks and a leftover at the standard stack size.

Converting total items to stacks and leftover, 64 items per stack
Total itemsFull stacksLeftover items
500 stacks50
641 stacks0
1001 stacks36
1502 stacks22
3004 stacks44
1,72827 stacks0
A total of exactly 1,728 items is a common Minecraft milestone: it is precisely 27 full stacks of 64, or one entirely full single chest.

How the stack size changes the split, for a fixed 200 items

The same 200 items, split at the stack sizes used by different item types in the game.

200 total items at different stack sizes
Items per stackFull stacksLeftover items
1200 stacks0
1612 stacks8
326 stacks8
643 stacks8
At a stack size of 1, every item is its own stack, so 200 items is simply 200 stacks with nothing left over; larger stack sizes fold the same 200 items into progressively fewer stacks.

Questions

Do all items in Minecraft stack to 64?

No. Most blocks and materials stack to 64, but a smaller group of items, including ender pearls, snowballs, eggs and several others, stack only to 16, and items such as tools, weapons, armour, potions, enchanted books and most food do not stack at all, meaning each one takes its own slot.

How many stacks fit in a single chest?

A single chest has 27 slots, so it holds up to 27 stacks of whatever item you are storing, before accounting for any leftover items that need their own slot. A double chest doubles that to 54 slots.

Why does the leftover matter if I only care about stacks?

The leftover is what stops a shorthand count of "about 3 stacks" from being wrong by up to 63 items. It is also the amount that will not fill a whole extra slot when you move the items into storage, so it is worth knowing before you assume a chest has room.

Can I use this for a stack size other than 64 or 16?

Yes. The items-per-stack field is free to edit, so it works for any stack size, including custom values from modded gameplay where stack limits can be changed from the vanilla defaults.
