Cost Per Unit Calculator

Cost per single unit from a total cost and the number of units, for production, buying in bulk or pricing.

Published 26 August 2026

What this calculator does

Cost per unit is the total cost of producing, buying or shipping a batch of items divided by how many units are in that batch. It is the figure that makes different pack sizes, suppliers or production runs genuinely comparable, since a lower total price means nothing on its own if it also buys fewer units.

The unit cost formula is simple, total cost divided by number of units, but it applies to almost any context: raw materials for manufacturing, a bulk grocery buy, a print run, or a batch of anything with a fixed total spend spread across a countable quantity.

The formula

FormulaCost per unit = Total cost / Number of units

Divide the total cost by the number of units in that total. The result is the average cost carried by each single unit, which stays valid for comparison as long as both figures cover the same batch.

TermMeaning
Cost per unitTotal cost divided by the number of units: the unit cost formula.
Total costEverything spent to acquire or produce the batch being measured.
UnitsThe count of individual items the total cost was spread across.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Total cost ($)The total amount spent, covering the whole batch or order.
Number of unitsHow many individual units that total cost covers.

When to use it

Comparing pack sizes

A 12-pack and a 30-pack of the same item at different total prices only compare fairly once each is reduced to its cost per unit.

Pricing a product for resale

Knowing the true cost per unit, including materials and any fixed costs folded into the batch, is the starting point for setting a margin on top.

Checking a bulk discount is real

A supplier offering a bigger box for a higher total price is not necessarily cheaper per unit; recalculating confirms whether the bulk option is actually better value.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Cost per unit as batch size grows, at a fixed total cost

The same $450 spread across a range of unit counts.

$450 total cost
UnitsCost per unit
50$9.00
100$4.50
120$3.75
150$3.00
200$2.25
300$1.50
Cost per unit falls as the same fixed total is divided across more units, though real bulk pricing usually changes the total cost too, not just the unit count.

Questions

What is the unit cost formula?

Cost per unit = total cost ÷ number of units. It is the average cost carried by a single item within a larger total, whether that total covers manufacturing, purchasing or any other batch of spend.

How to calculate cost per unit for a manufactured product?

Add up all costs that went into the production run, materials, labour and any allocated overhead, then divide that total by the number of units the run actually produced.

Is cost per unit the same as price per unit?

Not necessarily. Cost per unit is what it costs to produce or acquire an item; price per unit is what it sells for. The difference between the two is the margin.

Does this work for shipping costs specifically?

It can, but for shipping spend specifically the shipping cost per unit calculator is framed around that exact case, with the same total-divided-by-units formula.

For shipping spend specifically, see the shipping cost per unit calculator.
