Binge-watch time planner

Total time to finish a TV series, and how many days that takes.

Published 6 August 2026 · Updated 24 September 2026

What this calculator does

Total watch time is episodes multiplied by episode length. Twenty-four episodes at 45 minutes is 18 hours, which at two hours a night takes nine days.

The figure is usually larger than people expect, because a season sounds like a smaller commitment than the hours show. Eighteen hours is more than two full working days, and a long-running series with several seasons quickly reaches the hundreds of hours.

The formula

FormulaTotal time = episodes × episode length; days needed = total time / viewing hours per day

Total time is the episode count multiplied by the episode length. Days needed divides that by the daily viewing hours. The episodes-per-day figure works backwards from a one-week target, and the finish date projects the daily rate forward from today. Advertisement breaks are not accounted for, so broadcast series take longer than the calculation suggests.

When to use it

Deciding whether to start a series

The total hours is the honest commitment, and seeing it before starting is more useful than discovering it three seasons in.

Planning to finish before a deadline

The episodes-per-day figure works backwards from a target, which is the practical form when a new season is about to land.

Comparing two series

A 24-episode drama and a 60-episode comedy can be similar in total hours despite looking very different in episode count.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How long does a 24 episode season take?

The same series at a range of daily viewing rates.

24 episodes of 45 minutes
Viewing per dayTotal watch timeDays neededEpisodes per day to finish in a week
1 h18 h 0 min18.0 days3.4
2 h18 h 0 min9.0 days3.4
4 h18 h 0 min4.5 days3.4
8 h18 h 0 min2.3 days3.4
Total watch time holds at 18 hours regardless of pace, since the series length does not change. Days needed halves as viewing hours double, from 18 days at an hour a night down to 2.3 days at eight hours. Finishing in a week needs 3.4 episodes a day at any pace.

Questions

How long is a typical episode?

On streaming, where there are no advertisements, a half-hour comedy runs 22 to 30 minutes and an hour drama 42 to 55. Broadcast slots are longer than the content, so a series watched live takes noticeably more time than the runtime suggests.

Does this include advertisements?

No. Enter the actual runtime rather than the slot length. A broadcast hour drama is typically 42 to 45 minutes of content in a 60 minute slot, so watching live adds about a third to the total.

How many hours is a full series?

It varies enormously. A single season of an hour drama is typically 8 to 18 hours. A long-running network series with ten seasons of 22 episodes can exceed 150 hours, which is close to four working weeks.

Is watching faster the same as watching less?

Not for the total time, which is fixed by the content. Raising the daily hours only compresses the same viewing into fewer days. Playback speed adjustment does genuinely reduce total time, though it is not accounted for here.
