Weeks in the Year So Far Calculator

Whole weeks that have elapsed since 1 January, for today or any reference date you choose.

Published 27 August 2026

What this calculator does

This calculator counts how many whole weeks have elapsed since 1 January of the relevant year, up to and including a chosen reference date. It answers "how many weeks this year so far" style questions, whether for today or for looking back at how far into the year a past date fell.

It is the mirror image of counting weeks left in the year rather than weeks already gone. Both numbers come from the same day-of-year count, but a running total of weeks passed is the more natural framing for questions like tracking progress through a year of savings, training or study.

The formula

FormulaDays elapsed = (reference date − 1 January of that year)/86,400,000 ms + 1, to also count the reference date itself; whole weeks so far = days elapsed ÷ 7, rounded down

Count the days from 1 January of that year up to and including the reference date, then divide by 7. The whole number of weeks is that day count divided by 7, rounded down; the leftover days beyond the last whole week are shown separately.

TermMeaning
Reference dateThe date to count up to, defaulting to today.
Days elapsedThe number of days from 1 January to the reference date, inclusive of both.
Whole weeks so farDays elapsed divided by 7, rounded down to a whole number.

When to use it

Tracking progress through a savings or fitness plan

A plan structured in weekly stages benefits from knowing exactly which week of the year it currently is, rather than only the date.

Checking how far into the year a past event fell

Setting the reference date to any earlier date in the year shows how many weeks had passed by that point, useful when comparing timing across different years.

Reconciling a weekly report or timesheet

Weekly reporting cycles sometimes need to be matched against a running week count for the year, which this gives directly rather than counting manually from a calendar.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How the weeks-so-far total builds through the year

The same calculation applied to a spread of reference dates through the year.

The whole-weeks total rises by roughly 4 to 4.5 for each month that passes, since a month is a little over 4 weeks long.

Questions

Does this match the ISO week number of the date?

Not exactly. The ISO week number identifies which numbered week of the year a date falls inside, using fixed Monday-to-Sunday weeks. This calculator instead counts elapsed days since 1 January and divides by 7, a simple running total rather than a fixed week numbering scheme.

Why are there leftover days in the result?

A year rarely divides evenly into 7 day blocks starting from 1 January, so most reference dates land partway through a week rather than exactly on a 7 day boundary, leaving a remainder of 1 to 6 days.

How is this different from weeks left in the year?

Weeks left in the year counts forward from the reference date to 31 December. This calculator counts backward from the reference date to 1 January. The two totals for the same date will not add to exactly 52, since one whole week overlaps the reference date itself.

Can I use a date from a previous year?

Yes. Pick any date and the calculator uses 1 January of that date's own year as the starting point, so past and future dates both work.

For the opposite count, how many weeks remain before the year ends, see the weeks left in the year calculator. For the fixed ISO week number of a specific date, see the week number calculator.
