What this calculator does
This calculator converts an area you already know between square feet and square metres, using the exact, fixed conversion factor between the two units. It is a straightforward unit conversion rather than a room-area calculation, so it is the right tool when a square-footage figure needs converting to metric or vice versa, not when you need to work out an area from a room's length and width. Listings and spec sheets often shorten the two units to sqft and sqm, which is the same conversion under a different spelling.
The conversion factor itself never changes, since both units are formally defined against the metre: one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres, derived from the international foot being defined as exactly 0.3048 metres.
The formula
To convert square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.09290304. To convert square metres to square feet, divide by the same factor. Both directions use the identical, exact conversion constant.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Square foot (ft²) | An imperial area unit, the area of a square with 1-foot sides. |
| Square metre (m²) | The SI area unit, the area of a square with 1-metre sides. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |

| Value | The area to convert, in whichever unit you are converting from. |
| Convert | Choose whether you are converting square feet to square metres, or the reverse. |
When to use it
Comparing a US property listing to metric
US real estate listings are typically given in square feet, so converting to square metres makes the size directly comparable to listings from countries that use metric measurements.
Checking a flooring or paint quote
A quote or product coverage rating given in one unit can be checked against a room measured in the other, without needing to remeasure the room itself.
Converting a technical spec sheet
Some imported products or building materials quote area in square feet even in metric countries, so converting to square metres makes the figure easier to work with alongside other metric measurements.

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Questions
How many square metres is a square foot?
One square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metres, a fixed conversion factor since both units are formally defined relative to the metre.
How many square feet is a square metre?
One square metre equals approximately 10.7639 square feet, the reciprocal of the square-foot-to-square-metre factor.
Is this the same as working out a room's area?
No. This converts an area you already know between units. To calculate a room's area from its length and width, use a dedicated area calculator instead, then convert the result here if needed.
Why isn't the conversion a round number?
Because a foot and a metre are different, independently-defined base units of length, so squaring the length conversion factor (0.3048² = 0.09290304) doesn't produce a round number in either direction.
To calculate an area from a room's dimensions in square metres, see the square metre calculator.
