Pixel to Inches Conversion calculator

Converts a pixel measurement to inches, or inches to pixels, at any DPI you choose.

Published 27 August 2026

What this calculator does

Converting pixel to inches is not a fixed ratio: it depends on DPI, dots or pixels per inch, which varies by screen and by print setting. A 960-pixel-wide image is about 10 inches at 96 DPI, the common web default, but only 3.2 inches at 300 DPI, a common print resolution.

This converter works in both directions and leaves DPI fully editable, rather than assuming one fixed value, so it matches whatever screen or print setting is actually relevant, whether that is 72, 96, 150, 300 or any other DPI figure.

The formula

FormulaInches = pixels ÷ DPI; Pixels = inches × DPI

Divide a pixel count by the DPI to get inches, or multiply an inch measurement by the DPI to get pixels. DPI is the number of pixels (or printed dots) packed into one inch, so it is the conversion factor linking the two units.

TermMeaning
DPI (dots per inch)How many pixels or printed dots are packed into one inch of physical space.
PixelA single point in a digital image or screen grid, with no fixed physical size on its own.
InchA physical unit of length; how many pixels fit in it depends entirely on the DPI.

DPI (dots/pixels per inch)Dots or pixels per inch. 96 is a common web default, 300 a common print default, but check the actual setting for your screen or print job.

When to use it

Sizing an image for print

Print resolution is usually specified in DPI. Converting a pixel dimension at the intended print DPI shows the physical size the image will come out at.

Matching a web design spec

Web layouts are usually measured in pixels, but a print-style spec sheet or physical mockup may be in inches; converting between the two at the right DPI keeps the two consistent.

Checking screen density

Different screens pack different numbers of pixels per inch. Entering a screen's actual DPI shows how a pixel measurement translates to physical size on that specific display.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How many inches is 960 pixels, at different DPI settings?

The same pixel count converted at a range of DPI settings.

960 px converted at common DPI values
DPIResult
7213.333 in
9610.000 in
1506.400 in
2204.364 in
3003.200 in
6001.600 in
The same pixel count gives a smaller physical size as DPI rises, since more pixels are being packed into each inch.

Pixels to inches at 96 DPI, for common web widths

A range of pixel widths converted at the standard 96 DPI web default.

96 DPI, the standard web default
PixelsResult
96 px1.000 in
192 px2.000 in
480 px5.000 in
960 px10.000 in
1440 px15.000 in
1920 px20.000 in
At a fixed DPI, inches rise in direct proportion to the pixel count, since DPI is just a constant divisor.

Questions

How do I convert pixels to inches?

Divide the pixel count by the DPI. 960 pixels at 96 DPI is 10 inches; the same 960 pixels at 300 DPI is 3.2 inches.

What DPI should I use?

96 DPI is a common web default, 72 DPI an older screen default, and 300 DPI a common print default. Check the actual setting for your screen or print job rather than assuming one figure.

How do I convert inches to pixels?

Multiply the inch measurement by the DPI. A 4-inch image at 300 DPI is 1,200 pixels wide.

Why is there no single pixel-to-inch conversion factor?

A pixel has no fixed physical size by itself. Its physical size only exists once a DPI (or PPI) figure is attached, which is why DPI is a required, editable input here rather than a built-in constant.
